After my school district did not hire me as a summer worker in the schools for the summer, a coworker suggested I be a math tutor over the summer. I really like that idea, but I don’t even know where to start. Has anyone done this and what would you say would be a fair price to charge for math tutoring from a current middle school math teacher with the endorsements to teach up to eighth grade math and the knowledge to teach all high school math?

Most of our teacher tutors charge $20-30 regardless of level. I’m in greater/outstate MN btw.

I found some summer jobs on indeed that pay well. See if any colleges near you offer anything. But tutoring, I was gonna charge about 35-50 an hour.

I’m sorry to hear that. That’s a sign that something better is waiting ahead. I wish you the best on your search.

I tutor for Thinkster Math. They are always hiring tutors. I started right before the Pandemic. Awesome company! The nice thing is that they have digital worksheets that provide instant feedback. You don't have to prepare anything.

What would u do in this "hypothetical" scenario.
1. Student gets 95 percentile on standardized tests in 1st grade.
2. 2nd gr teacher, capable and flexible but a little old school.
3. Parent, from foreign country, wants us to teach 2 years ahead of where student is at in math and reading in case they have to return to other country.
4. District's old standard for acceleration is at the 97th+ percentile and other students are much more"advanced".
5. Parent wants detailed steps for teacher's plan

What’s your opinion on math homework? I teach 4th grade and have always given it but I’d like to see what others do and weigh out if it’s really worth it. If I give it, I feel like I should spend class time going over it but on the other hand I stress myself out trying to keep the absent work organized and those that don’t even do the work.

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.

My district has finally gone 1-to-1. Is there a good app or website that I could use to have students submit answers anonymously while going over problems in class? I did this last week using Kahoot to go over a state testing review packet. It was great because I could see how many got the right answer and move on if no one missed the question. However, I would like to do it without having to create something in advance. I hope this doesn't sound confusing.

I definitely feel like student engagement is low in the virtual realm. Any suggestions would be great.
