I’ve been there! What’s helped me is carving out “me time” during trips—whether it’s a quiet morning walk, exploring a local coffee shop, or even a spa visit. I also try to stick to routines, like exercising or eating meals at consistent times, to give myself some normalcy.
I think the key is setting boundaries with work during trips. If your schedule allows, block off a couple of hours to decompress or explore. Traveling nonstop without personal downtime is a fast track to burnout. Also, don’t feel guilty about skipping the tourist spots—you don’t have to “make the most” of every city if your body is telling you to rest. Listen to yourself!
Been there! I’ve bumped into the wall in the middle of the night bathroom runs because that’s where the door was last night! I enjoyed the benefits for a long time (points earned for free personal travel, getting to stay at the best hotels and eat at the best restaurants on the company’s dime) but it eventually got old. For as long as you have to do it, consider gamifying it. Use AI to create a personal scavenger hunt for you, plugging in the destinations as far out as possible to the extent you know them. Give it parameters such as “I only have 90 minutes free time per day and want to experience something new or unique about each destination within that time frame” and commit to completing as much as you can even if not 100%. It could be something as simple as finding a different gym with drop in benefits to work out at, or a different park to jog in which keeps it focused on you rather than the work/travel. It might mean having to forfeit dinner or breakfast with team members sometimes.
