Damn, Wolfgang is cleaning up.
If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

I volunteer every Wednesday evening for one hour, teaching free language classes to refugees and low-income families. Been doing it for five years, I run the program now.
Every job I have had in advertising has had a problem with it, because they want you to revise an instagram post at 8pm, but you can't help out the team and now deadlines are pushed, because you're volunteering for refugees.
It's not even during work hours. And it's for ONE hour. I will reply at 9:30
We just got a brief and the CD who scolded me two months ago for standing firm on my responsibility outside of work just pitched a refugee idea for our haircare client.
I'm leaving this job soon. I don't like to be petty but this one, this one I want to call him out on...
Meanwhile, every interview I take, everyone's all gung-ho about it until I mention it's on a Wednesday evening. Then they get all quiet and make cringey faces.
Horrible people, praising themselves on LinkedIn for "saving the world" through "raising awareness" to ocean plastic or domestic violence, but toss out the resumé of someone actually doing it on the ground just once a week. I'm so tempted to leak emails and flee to the Solomon Islands sometimes
*exhales* gonna go finish revising these hashtags, they need more "magic"
I really hope you document these interactions to protect yourself. You're a good person and it would be awful to lose you to a jerk on a power trip.

Why do you tell them in interviews that you do the volunteering work?
I'd just let them deal with it after you've secured the job.
I know, that's my strategy moving forward, everyone has told me that. and i guess take a break from it for the first two or three weeks just to make an impression on my work before i mention it and go back to the classes 😕
Never show your all your cards and never fold.

Every company had a problem with you not being available for one hour on a Wednesday evening? How did they express that? And when you mentioned it during interviews they didn’t hire you because of it? That’s so strange. I’ve never heard of something like that and I’ve worked at some pretty demanding agencies.
It's not all the time, but now and then there's a busy day or two or three weeks of grinding late and everyone is working late and I tell them I have to leave at 6:30 on Wednesday, by the third week in a row account managers start getting ancy and pushy, then a CD will just do that "ugh, okay" and start asking if I can postpone this week or next week or start talking about how busy everyone is and they need me on this because of how important it is bla bla
You know when you have to leave early for something during a busy week, the way everyone responds? Imagine that every week and building up more and more. They don't care why or what your "obligation" is outside of work. They treat it no differently than if you're babysitting someone's dog or have a dinner date. It's all the same to them. It's you inconveniencing them. They have this idea that because it's volunteer that makes it a voluntary option. I run the classes, I can't just cancel them at the last minute week after week. I have two other volunteers to take over from time to time but in the end, all they see is the constant inconvenience it is to the work

Correct reply when this happens:
On Wednesday evenings for one hour I am actually contributing to making the world better directly, hands on. And so for that time I will not be able to contribute to your ego driven, awards bait conceit that will likely achieve little to nothing in terms of material situational improvement. You're welcome."
