Firms will be recruiting around November for their next year needs, so I would just wait until you are closer to being able to start the job. There are no guarantees, but I think an experienced CPA with years of management experience would be standout candidate for a senior role. You could try for manager roles too, but unless your Army audit experience translates well (I have no clue), that may not be likely. Unlike intern and new hire recruiting, experienced hire recruiting is done on an as needed basis, so you’re generally not going to find firms willing to wait many months to fill the role. I don’t think you’ll have too much trouble though. Good luck.
I have agreed to teach two sections of intermediate accounting in the Spring semester of 2026 at Temple University. Now, all I need is a senior associate position in a regional or national firm when I return from being mobilized to the US Border in December.
Could anyone give me pointers on how to secure such a position in Philadelphia, PA? So far, no one will commit to hiring me 5 months out. Should I wait until November to apply?
Are you open to going back to Forvis? If so, believe that could be an easy conversation if you have maintained contacts
Thank you for your service.
Fast forward, now I'm promotable to Lieuetenant Colonel and reaching my required time for retirement from the Army.
I would like to return to public accounting. I'm a 43 year old CPA with about 10 years of accounting experience. I have been running a 1,200 Soldier battalion for the last two years as an operations officer while still maintaining my position as an internal auditor for the Army. I have masters degrees in Taxation, Business Administration, and Management Information Systems. I have also finished all coursework for a doctorate from Temple University.
Look at recruiting through Temple. Winter intern recruiting is happening now, so there should be a lot of activity, a meet the firms event, etc. Understood that you don’t want an internship - but you would be able to meet recruiters for all the firms.
I knew the job was a dead end, but it paid more and offered me paid military leave, student loan forgiveness, low workload, and higher pay.
When I resigned from my public accounting job with Forvis, the senior partner asked me what it would take to keep me. When I told him of my new comp package, he offered me more and promised advancment but couldn't quite match it.
