Alvarez & Marsal - good shop? Looking at Chicago, specifically. If anyone could provide insights into culture, benefits, etc., would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Comp in general is above average. Benefits I’d say are average. If by transactions you mean TAG, it is pretty commoditized work (FDD/QoE) so you won’t see the restructuring/PEPI type comp that people will generally refer to. Chicago office is nice, pretty empty during the week. I don’t think TAG travels much. I can only say good things about PEPI culture, but have not really worked with other groups. Not sure what RB1 is going on about, but I’d be surprised to hear about a group with a terrible culture given our leadership.

Their PEPI group evolved from their bankruptcy practice and carved themselves a large niche in the PE market. The most exciting projects are their transformational change implementations. The work can be grueling, but the pay is comparable to MBB, except at the partner level of course.

like

Very bright group, top heavy so you get to work closely with the MD/SDs on daily basis. Culture is what you make it out of it, your comp is heavily based on your utilization, but the bonus is very lucrative if you can hit the utilization target

like

Worst restructuring shop when considering culture - the above comments on utilization speaks to their culture A few months ago there were a bunch of articles on sexual harassment at the firm but can’t find those articles now

Refer to NYT’s blockbuster 2018 going after McK for all kinds of things...

Very entrepreneurial...in a good way. Restructuring and PEPI being best. Comp is highly perf based (can be a problem if you aren’t a go get it yourself type).

Thank you, everyone! Really appreciate the responses. Have a great week.

Just turned 50 and allocated about 10% in my 401k to a long term bond fund which is already down 3% this year . I am not a fan of bonds especially with the current rate environment. Any suggestions instead of bonds to protect principal . Money market ? Target date fund ?

I’m waiting on a revised offer from a firm. The first one they didn’t include signing bonus in writing and there were a few things I wanted clarified and in writing (because this is business). I’m a 4th year and kind of a unicorn in that Im already niche specialized, Ive built a brand in the area & I regularly speak/ get asked to appear on panels. Market right now is signing bonus + year end. I asked for 50k to make me whole from my current firm. They came back with 20. I countered 35k. Advice?

I have two offers: 1. a strategy and ops role at a late stage startup, pre ipo (think databricks, Stripe) 2. a data science role at a bank. Comp is roughly the same at 270k TC. I’m much more interested in data science long term, but have FOMO about missing out on pre ipo shares. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
