I’m out. Thank you Amex. Hello Chase
Chase reserve is increasing theirs to $550, it’s causing me to rethink if I want the card
They’re pushing it, but I get at least $2k of actual value out of the card each year and CSR does not compare. The only thing CSR has going for it is the 1:1 Hyatt transfer. However, I think it’s distasteful of Amex to up the price and reduce entry to centurion lounges…
Example: I stayed at the Thompson Cabo earlier this year, standard rate $900 or 25k Hyatt points per night. If I book through chase travel it would have been 60k points per night, but by transferring to Hyatt I only paid 25k points per night. It’s almost 2.5x better redemption if you’re staying at one of their high end hotels.
Not really a dealbreaker but more of a long sigh towards Amex doubling down on their annoying ways. Might end up cancelling just to focus on other cards.
If you found value of out of it before, this doesn’t really change anything.
I personally get a ton of value from having it, but it really varies based on your habits.
Here’s my perspective:
- $200 Hotel Credit (New), I travel a lot and do use this
- $200 Uber credit, you get this deposited every month into your account, it is not use it or lose it.
- $200 flight credit, there’s tricks to get this as a gift card / use this for actual flights
- $100 credit at Saks annual, not hard to use it, plus Saks has a ton of brands like Aesop/Kiehls
These $700 credit offset the fee itself for me.
Then there’s a ton of little things that make it worth it:
- Amex Offers - $180 in PayPal credits in 2021, $200 in Home Depot and Bestbuy
- Platinum Lounge visits
- Clear Membership (I wouldn’t pay for this normally but it’s really nice to have)
- Return Protection - $300 per item up to $1K, only on the high fee cards. Unlike Chase’s Amex will pay for return shipping if they ask to return the item.
- Purchase Protection - $10K per item, $50K max, includes lost and theft protection. $10K lost is unique to Amex Platinum, no other card offers this. CSR is theft protection only. I left my shopping bag on a train when I was going home, filed a police report, Amex covered all the items in the bag, no issues.
Actually the Uber credit every month is use it or lose it. It expires the month it’s given.

Wow, no.
Seems like it’s not worth it
Precheck/global is a one time thing every 5 years
Uber is spread across the month so you gotta use it or lose it
Lounge access is nice but I could just expense it when traveling for work
All the rest are ok
Our form stopped paying for the platinum expense 3 years ago. I switched to the regular Corp Amex after that and tbh, life has been fine . I don’t even remember what was so great about the platinum card.
Ah, I did miss the lounge, but I just ended up drinking at a regular bar if I wanted to drink. Was not worth it for ME to pay the fee.
It does a great job of attracting customers who dgaf about value or $695…. Which is an important market segment
They doubled the Centurion black card from $5k to $10k for each card holder of that account last year. While also devaluing some of the exclusive personalized benefits (don’t get a dedicated concierge anymore it’s all cohort model now).
I’ll ditched the card during covid. Will sign up again once I start traveling again

This is what I did. I will use the rewards, but I primarily have the card for the lounge because I hate dealing with people in the airport.
I have the CSR, Amex Plat, and Amex Delta Reserve. Send help. It all made sense with travel pre COVID but I’m strongly considering cutting the Delta card.
