An agency reached out with a great opportunity. I’m happy where I am, but there’s no real path upward. Given how unstable the market is, I’d only consider a move if a six-month severance clause were part of the offer. With 15 years of experience and based in NYC, I’d rather protect myself than jump into something uncertain—especially when interviews only reveal so much. Anyone negotiated such thing ? Any tips?

Six months can be difficult outside of the c-suite. So even if you ask for six, be ready to accept three or four.

Where would you be moving to, and why is there no real path upward in your current job?

If you want guaranteed stability, you may want to reconsider changing jobs. If you want a change and long term career growth, go for it. There are no guarantees in advertising.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
