Not lucrative. The most money is in business immigration. Working for the government at an immigration court or for DHS is an option with GS scale pay.
Agreed. Most business immigration firms where you’ll make money are mills and you’re beholden to big business execs who expect you to move mountains overnight. Hard to keep up with the ever-changing policies and regs. Removal defense is only for the passionate and/or you have a wealthy spouse to rely on for paying your bills. And it’s for the passionate because it’s truly and uphill battle you most likely won’t win unless you’ve got a good judge and perfect client…and even then you could still not obtain relief. I clerked for immigration court after law school under Trump 1.0 and it was pure chaos, which made even the most conservative/strict DHS attorneys and immigration judges resign.
Think about the client demographic; how much do you really think they can afford? Most are low flat rate cases, not worth it.
I have a friend who has had her own practice for approximately 15 years. She works with only white collar folks - think highly educated people from China, India, etc. who need help navigating the immigration process when coming to the US for jobs. She makes great money!
