I’ve recently done that - about a year ago. See 5 steps below - step 5 is key.
Step1: Revamp your CV and remove or really shorten the “experience” section. You DON’T want to show how great an auditor you are. CV should have a professional summary, then a skills section which shows all transferable skills. Focus on project management, client communication , commercial awareness and financial analysis/modelling. Experience section to only show relevant work done - like M&A accounting, FDD experience, or CDD (now that you are in strategy consulting)
Step 2: Reach out to ALL sorts of firms. Doesn’t matter size, location. You want to shoot an arrow in all directions because M&A roles are low in supply and very high in demand. Key is to get into the door - nomatter which one. Later you can use that experience to swim into larger pools. Apply for like 15-20 jobs daily.
Step 3: Network the hell from LinkedIn. Not just messages - ask them to F*ckin have a call so they remember you and WANT to refer you. They know you’re serious about it.
Step 4: Do a financial modelling course. Not YouTube videos, a formal, proper course online from CFI or WSO. You NEED to show that you’re serious.
Step 5: Pray you get into M&A and the devil takes your soul.
Thank you - this is really helpful. I haven’t applied anywhere yet as still doing the groundwork, have a call with a partner at a smaller firm next week (woohoo nepotism). Hoping to leach off my dad’s contacts for the rest of the year and if I don’t get a job from that start applying from feb after they get their bonuses and start quitting.
Will defo look into the modelling course - something I’ve considered doing for years.
