It's good at the outset to recognize that office politics can have varying definitions. I think of the benign version, as people being congenial and cooperative in an office environment. That idea of political meaning people being able to compromise on what the outcome will be. The way to get better with that is simply to engage with people and be helpful. Someone once suggested to me to do the kind of work that makes other people's jobs easier. If you do that, you'll build up political capital in the organization.

Office politics are toxic. The only way to get better at them is to learn how to also be toxic.
It's wise (and unfortunately necessary) to be politically aware within the organization. That said, I have always felt that "leader" and "politician" are polar opposites so you just need to keep an eye out for potential landmines, especially in times of management changes. When there are new bosses, politics become more important than skill set, business needs, and personal/team accomplishments for some period of time (forming, storming, norming, performing).
I'm a big fan of Brene Brown but I have to say that while "authenticity" and leadership come naturally to me, I have definitely been too honest for some bosses and it's cost me.
Good luck and be careful. Politics in corporate settings are like swimming with sharks and piranha at the same time.
I know this is going to sound bad but honestly you just have to learn how to play the game. I like to call it schmoozing but its basically kissing the rear ends of the higher ups and people who matter the most. Its not always fun but that is really how you get good at office politics. You kind of have to suck up to the higher ups.
