Do a lot of obsessive research about neighborhoods and boroughs, and see if any feel more “homely” for you. Look into how the subways (which we just call “trains”) and even the surprisingly convenient buses operate. Know what’s touristy (and overpriced) to avoid, and more affordable options for day-to-day stuff. Use Google maps for street views. Luckily you’re probably more than used to winter and have appropriate clothes and shoes.
But just start researching everything now. Reddit is a great tool to find stuff.
Worry about Jan first. Once you’re here and somewhat settled THEN worry about May. Might be worthwhile to cold email employers here (or back home, if you end up hating it here).
Best of luck.
