Anyone else hate small talk on slack/instant message?

Hi music teachers! How are you surviving? I’ve been teaching band and choir for a long time, but distance learning and Zoom has me stumped. I’m lucky to have a job, I realize. What are some things you’re doing in your virtual classrooms that your music students enjoy?

If [said company] asks to put you "on hold" for the month of December...but you found a better offer, do you:
-have to follow through with said gig
-communicate this with them if they haven't followed up yet (but added you to new slack channels)

Mac or HP or Dell: I prefer Mac notebooks. However it seems there might be limitations with the use of Skype or other applications based on materials I have seen. What do you all recommend is the best laptop for working at Deloitte?

Today shit blew up so much on my two gigs all I could hear for hours was the constant barrage of pinging noises from outlook, gmail, slack and teams. Like some kind of hellish tech sounding symphony. I will probably go to sleep tonight with pings, clicks, chimes and whooshes echoing in my head into the void. Seriously y’all how do we not lose our fucking minds?

I tutor ESL after school and recently switched over to Zoom. Students are stating that they are unable to annotate. I’ve read that this is common for Chromebook users. Does anyone know of a way to bypass this and/or any video/picture tutorials? Otherwise, it looks like we’ll just have to add an additional open tab with a google share doc. How are you developing client relationships when in-person networking is out?

I'm used to hanging out with my clients frequently, grabbing coffee, stopping by the office, etc. Zoom/Hangouts meetings just feel really awkward and it's difficult switching from business development which was 90% IRL to nearly all online... Especially when I run a 1-person shop.

Researching the job mkt & pay for nursing: It is so easy to set up a first interview esp. as a nurse. Set up a zoom meeting, in the zoom meeting ask abt job details and ask for the salary range. They will give it to you, and in my case it was the same range for both of the companies. (Hospice oncall nurse here👋). Then you fit in somewhere on that continuum based on education & experience—that where the negotiation comes in—they will make a case to place you as low as possible on the scale.

Do MBA student clubs use Teams or Slack? Do they use just the free tier?

Zoom meetings have been fantastic. I can highly recommend my home group SOS. 7:30 daily. Great way to get grounded as you start your day.

This individual has a doctorate in business with a focus in HR, her SPHR, Federal, and private sector experience at the singer level, and has a fabulous personality. Got staffed on an investigations matter and was asked to draft the letter. I added everything the senior associate said to and I still got a rewrite. I’m a mid level at a new firm, so I feel particularly awful about this. Feels like I’ll never be a good lawyer.

Maybe I’m just realizing I’m lazy… but do y’all ever get assigned an actual, hard research or drafting project and realize you don’t like the effort? Like plz let me go back to doc review.

What are the unwritten rules of your group/office/firm?

Am I the only one whose time entries get worse the busier and more chaotic a specific case is? Like for example preparation for a dispositive hearing with a lot of factual and legal issues that’s treated like a fire drill. My time entries are chaotic and rereading at the end of the month I feel like the time was totally justified but also like wow it sounds like we were jumping all over the place and we were, lol time entries were not your typical sequential one step at a time thing.

After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.
