A few of my friends stream for a living and while I’m a little jealous, it’s a lot of pressure for it to be sustainable income for more than a few years. One made it work by creating a presence and then applying to write content for a couple game guides and now has a part time gig of writing for a gaming strategy & review site.
Another one manages to make $50,000/year and only streams 3-4x a week for 2-3 hours, though usually one of the streams each week he tries to go for ~6 hrs, or some weeks he’ll just add an extra stream if he’s feeling it. He used to do IT management so he figures he’d jump back in whenever he needs to, possibly at a slightly lower level to compensate for the time away.
Another friend has like no business plan, but his wife has a steady job, and he does pretty well. I stream recreationally but I think that’s all I’ll ever do
- a decent webcam if you want to facecam
- internet capable of supporting streaming (you can also configure stream quality in OBS)
- OBS Studio to broadcast using your Twitch key (located in your Twitch settings)
- Headset or standalone mic. If you go with a stand-alone, I recommend getting a condenser mic. I have a tiny one that I travel with and it’s pretty great. Most people opt for a Blue Yeti mic (~$100) but most decent headsets will suffice for recreational streaming.
- Connect your twitch acct to Streamlabs (owned by Twitch now I think?), and follow the steps to use it with OBS to have in-stream notifications pop up when someone follows you, etc.
- if you want to stream console games you need a capture card like El Gato
