Ogre battle on Super Nintendo. Really great strategy game but had a super limited US release
Limbo. Pretty dark indy game that got a lot of traction
Astonia 3 in between Diablo 2 and WoW, circa 2002.
Two words: Pony Island
Not sure it’s good but it is... something
.
Doraemon
I've played both ogre battles. Pretty similar, though witch is nerfed in 64.
My favorite obscure game was probably phantom dust, a release title for the original Xbox; really cool fusion of card game deck management and action
D1 - I played and loved that one too. Did you try Braid? Similar style with a fantastic narrative payoff
Nah but will look into it. Thanks!
Four of my top ten: Ogre Battle 64, Dwarf Fortress, Gungrave, and my all time favorite The Legend of Mana can all be considered niche or obscure depending on your gage.
I've poured many hours into relatively obscure games. Kerbal Space Program and Factorio have the highest number of hours on my Steam log, but the game I probably played most before Steam was Laser Squad Nemesis, a now defunct multiplayer XCOM-alike from the legendary Julian Gallop. I'm willing to bet no-one here has even heard of it!
A1 did you ever play ogre battle on snes? I never played on N64 so am interested in how they compare
SC1, I only remember briefly playing the SNES, so I cant tell you which one is better. But the gameplay is very similar. The sprites on 64 are predictably of higher quality though. The Ogre Battle series was such a hidden gem. To this day I still want to play it again, but because of the way it was built its too hard to emulate. Only reason I would buy a switch today is if it had a virtual console with OB64 available.
A1 I never heard that about it being hard to emulate, do you know more detail? I’d find that really interesting to see that if you read it somewhere(being honest here not snarky). I still have my snes and have consistently played it for 20 years but my SNES went on the fritz this year :(
I meant the OB64 version. Because of the tech used in the 64 cartridge was a lot more developed and unique than its competitors, whenever people used emulators the backgrounds often dont show up and sometimes neither do the effects or the music. Dont know the technical details, I would think the snes version shouldnt have those problems. Or maybe someone already found a way to run ob64 successfully, its been a year or two since I last tried to run it.
Interesting. Yeah now that you mention it when I was last on emulator sites they didn’t have much N64
Anodyne, highly recommend
