Anyone know anything about MOFO technology transactions group? Culture? Types of work (eg, own work versus deal support)? How it compares to other SF techie firms (eg, Cooley, Fenwick, Gunderson, etc)?

I work in another tech transactions group that primarily does standalone licensing work, and I rarely see MoFo. I would not view them to be as strong in this practice as the other firms you’ve mentioned.

Some partners were wonderful to work for and others were terrible managers. The experience (standalone licensing or deal support) really depends on your luck of the draw on which partner you work for. There was high associate turnover when I was there.

Having been at or across many firms in this practice, MoFo only makes sense if you want to be a support attorney. If you want to do legit standalone tech transactions/product counseling and never see an M&A or financing deal (unless you really really want to) and be working with and for the literal best at it, then there is no place better than Perkins Coie for tech transactions. Our junior and mid level associates usually run circles around partners at other firms during negotiations and the training is second to none. The average big deal size can be anywhere from $1bn-$100bn (think collaborations or supply agreements), I don’t really get involved on a deal as a partner unless it’s >$2bn or the client really wants me on it. We have done the big Microsoft/OpenAI deal (Mofo who is OAI’s main counsel wasn’t even tapped for that deal for OAI), Microsoft/Anthropic, heck every major standalone tech deal in the past 10 years had Perkins on one side or the other. On the product counseling side, we are THE AI firm, and have been advising and publishing on AI for over 15 years. There is a reason no one leaves Perkins tech transactions to lateral to a different firm (unless they washed out). If people leave, it’s to go in house at the top tech companies in the world.

funny

MoFos culture has been destroyed over the last year but the new leadership. Run far far away. Everyone is MISERABLE and trying to leave.

I haven't heard great things. Much more deal work and fewer interesting, truly revolutionary tech clients. Nice enough people but not really mentioned in the same category as those other firms.

I’m a junior AD with masters degree from portfolio school, 2 years agency and freelance experience. Looking to move to Chicago or Midwest cities. What kind of $$ range would that be?

Currently making $75k, which is very low compared to my counterparts. However, in February I’m supposed to get a salary adjustment with my yearly review. I got a job offer for $120k-150k which I turned down cuz I want to stay at Adobe.

How/when do I use this to leverage a good salary adjustment in Feb?

Giving notice tomorrow. Accepted another offer. Nervous to tell my boss because I know I’ll be leaving them screwed but I’m miserable. Love my team. The client is stupid and the work is soul crushingly uncreative. But still feel guilty :(

Should I disclose or hide the fact that I am on maternity leave? I have an interview with a big law firm in NY. I’m currently working for a law firm in Atlanta. Do you think partners in law firms have too much power and autonomy? eg. the power to refuse leave, to do your annual appraisal, to make you work while on leave, to overwork people, to manage the team on their on terms etc. Is this power bad or good for the firm and the team overall?
