Hello, I've worked in long term care for 3.5 years in a rotation between nights and days. In my experience nights are you leave when the work is done, sometimes on time but often late. I am not sure of thats the same for your employer but I've heard it's the same at the other LTC pharmacies around mine. If you don't mind the lifestyle of work nights then it's not a bad gig but it's impossible to have a social life and see family.

I worked days in LTC for a long time, and had to cover overnights when those pharmacists were on vacation. It was mostly checking data entry (they had an overnight tech too), and filling stat orders. If all the typing got done, I might print and sort some labels or do a final check of the tech was able to label some meds. We always left at 6am.
When I used to work in a pharmacy on the floor, I would specifically request night shifts because it was way more chill. As stated above, it's just filling orders and data entry. You don't have to deal with customers of course
It kinda depends if it's 24hr or not.
My location isn't. We have to be on call 5-7x a month where we may get called in for stat narcs not in the homes e kits or IV medications.
You'll learn IV antibiotic compounding.
You'll be told to do whatever the homes want really which can be annoying, but I guess thats similar in retail...for example well stat calcium tabs or vitamin B if they complain enough.
No windows, no patients, deal with nurses on the phone mostly. The homes are generally unorganized and call for meds right away they should have.
Questions? Ask away.
How many pharmacist and techs works each shift? What would you say the stress level is like when you compare it to retail pharmacy? Do you have to deal with insurance?
The night shift at the very small hospital where I work is covered by a single pharmacist with no techs. It just takes a couple of critical patients in the ER or ICU to make the pharmacist's life a living nightmare. When I come for my morning shift, I hear many horror stories from our overnight pharmacists.
Hoping folks on this thread are still active - I’m considering accepting a full time 3rd shift position in a longterm care pharmacy. Is a shift differential common for these positions? Any other negotiations I should consider? Schedule will likely be 7 on/7 off.
