Are copywriters the red headed stepchildren of advertising, or is it just me?

My art director partners have always had more responsibilities than me, and sometimes I get so little work that I wonder why they even hired me.

Also, when I was an intern, they put every intern’s name up on a board on my first day to welcome us, everyone except for me…

Copywriters are top of the heap at every agency I’ve ever been at.

Yeah it’s more an issue among the creative department or maybe it is just you. Agency-wide creative is the most prized talent in the agency and wield the most power. You might need to turn around stuff unfairly quickly and pull rabbits out of a hat, but by and large nobody puts baby in the corner.

Most art directors can’t even do work that is on brief without a good copywriter partner.

Have amazing ideas. Master persuasion. Solve problems from unique angles. Distill the idea down to its purest, simplest form and then blow it up and out. Know how to explain the work strategically so you can sell it and actually make it. Understand your clients’ business. Be the grown up. Talk the clients’ language. Learn how to talk about ideas. Understand how ideation and execution work and be able to explain the what, how and why. Soon, you’ll be more than a great copywriter, you’ll be a valuable partner to the strategy and account teams — and a great mentor and creative director to junior creatives.

Why does your partner have so much more work than you do? What kind of work are they being asked to do? This is very much against the norm of advertising dynamics

The intern thing totally sucks, but at risk of sounding mean, move past it. Clerical error. Get your name on something else great and earn some credits that matter! You’ve got this.

This is quite the leap. I’m asking this specific poster why their partners seemingly have so much more work than they do, per their post.

I’m so jealous of you guys. You get the glory and the sleep.

Glory? Yes. Sleep? Debatable.

It isn’t fair, but when a good campaign comes out, the writer gets more credit and calls from recruiters

You west coast?

At my previous job, I was the only copywriter for four art directors for at least 4 years. No wonder I’m burnt the hell out.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
