Vyvanse has been the only medication that has worked for me but it truly only works if I eat small meals throughout the day and go to bed early/get 7-8hrs of sleep. I have had struggles with getting “used to” dosages but usually will need a week to try to detox and reset and implement the effective eating/sleeping habits.
I’ve been getting by on 20mg of addy for years, primarily by being strategic on what/when I eat and drink. Keep a chart and log everything
My best caffeine/food times are different than my other neurospicy friends. I can’t seem to find any rhyme or reason, but once I turned it into a game and self-experimenting I started getting good results. I also restructured my work flow to take advantage of my goblin brain’s quirks (so I’m not relying on meds alone to be productive)
So I had to stop and try quelbree, which hasn’t worked that well and came with unwanted sides. Now, I just feel like nothing will work.
I had to go on 2 months of disability leave because of side effects from new medication and the trial and error of finding the next one. I'm sorry that it's been rough.
To what extent is this because the meds actually don't work, versus you having unrealistic expectations about how you'll feel long-term if you find a medication route that works for you?
I think it's common for people to start meds and expect their ADHD to be cured, and for a short period when they start a new plan, it may feel like they are because of the dopamine rush you might get from trying a new thing. But once your body gets used to the drug and the newness high wears off, you are realistically going to find that the medication doesn't reverse all of the issues you have with ADHD. You will still very much be a person with ADHD who has to do some things to keep it in check. The difference will be that without meds it will be a massive and often inescapable struggle to do any of those things, and with meds at least some things will be easier, or it will take less effort to put those practices in place than it took before.
