What you should do is look into contract work. Get with a reliable company. I did that and I am a senior. They liked me and my skills were considered valuable. Sending out applications is a waste of times. If they like you enough they may hire you full time. In the meanwhile you’te actively employed.
I am an older admin as well with loads of experience and i am having problems landing a job. I apply for mostly contract positions and still nothing. Interviewed and nothing more after that.
Both. I have applied for hundreds of jobs since March and only a few interviews and 2 offers. Had my resume professionally done. It’s very competitive. I’m 49 too and have only left 10 years on my resume.
I suspect it's a combination of two things, a pretty lousy job market and some degree of ageism. The job market has been kind of stagnant, some people are calling it a white collar recession. I think companies are just afraid to do much hiring. As for the ageism, that's tricky, no one will ever admit to it, but you have to feel like it's a legit issue. There are reasons, many of them more or less shady, why employers prefer younger people (they're more malleable, expect less compensation, etc.).
Sadly, what you say is probably true, and less compensation lends to 'you get what you pay for' in this role.
61 and lots of experience but no degree - Jackie of a lot of skills… I am afraid to answer years of experience questions which will show age due to the fact most want younger and don’t want to pay retirement expenses to come down the line. It’s all about the bottom line. Ghost jobs and elections (this is NOT a political debate - no political comments please) are not helping job seekers. Along with more combined tasks for less pay make this a daunting challenge. Am I off base here? I am in Fort Worth, Texas.
In my opinion, you are not off base at all. I am 67 and have almost 50 years experience as an admin/executive assistant (started my career when we were called secretaries). I'm in Bedford, Texas. I'm not ready to retire yet. Don't give up! We still have a lot to bring to the table. Good luck!
i think the fact that you're getting interviews means that it's probably not age discrimination, they can tell based on your resume how long you've been working. I think it's just a horrible job market right now and there are probably people who are getting their names passed along who are taking the jobs :/ Just keep at it, I hope that something works out soon!!
I echo the same. I am an older admin as well with over 20 years of experience and since my last employment i can't land a job. I feel discouraged at times but i need a job because i can't afford to retire right now. Hopefully, i am successful in the new year
49 years old is still young. And with solid skills, companies would be fools not to invest in someone like you who fall under key words like polished and wisdom. It's unfortunate it could be the poor job industry as well as ageism combined.
I can relate it’s been a whole year
It's been a whole year? 😭😳 What do you do? Applied for any assistance?
If you haven't done this already, re-do your resume with only the last 15 years of experience. Anything longer than that, do not include. Fingers crossed thing will turn around for you.
I’m in my 40s too, and after taking a break for family reasons, the job hunt was way harder than I expected. The market is definitely tough, and sometimes age might play a role, but I also think the nature of admin work has changed a lot. The technology and tools have evolved so quickly. Maybe refreshing some of those tech skills could give you an edge. You have a lot to offer, so don't give up!
I'm right there with you. I've been applying for jobs for last 6 mnths now. I'm in my fifties & have a ton of solid administrative experience. Heard that companies would rather hire a younger generation so they can train them on their terms according to policy, Younger generation may stick around longer especially if it's a full time job vs someone in their fifties leaving due to low salary?
I'm 61 with 30 years of Administrative experience and recently offered a position paying $19 an hour with one week vacation. SMH!
Yes! Remove any dates from your resume. Dont say xx years of experience. Dress and do your makeup to look younger. Keep em guessing.
Where you can don’t fill it in. Good luck!
