I was fortunate, as an immigrant my fists job out of college was washing dishes, did that and random work for a few years, once I got a work permit did a sting in manufacturing, and later got a job at an investment bank trough networking, then a profesor from school went and joined McK, He invited me to apply to the Firm. As I look back, concur with you OP, it’s all about your network, as immigrants or even members of less affluent communities minorities can be at a disadvantage because we lack a network, which means we have to take less conventional paths
I met a partner through one of my after school programs in high school and kept in touch through college
MBA

Through a lot of trial and error. Probably more so than my peers whose parents did not immigrate to the US. It also made me realize the value of my network (or lack there of in some cases).
Networking with everyone I knew and pure patience in the application process.
2 MBAs
