I feel the same as you. I actually don’t celebrate the holidays with my students in my classroom. I create a festive yet calm and inviting space with seasonal decorations. I keep my routines and schedule for my class the same, and I provide activities that are fun and engaging and based on their interests. The “escape” from the overstimulating holiday stuff in my classroom seems to work for my particular population of diverse learners and makes my students with ASD and anxiety feel
safe available for learning. I lost some people in the last year, too. A break from holidays-in-your-face feels like the right thing to right now.
Pro
This year more kids were appreciative of my little gift than ever before. I have heard that some of our students di not get any gifts.
I've been thinking about this a lot this year too. I lost my mom recently and so this holiday season is feeling very tough for me, and it's making me more aware of students who may have experienced some losses and/or difficult family situations that make the holidays tough. It's hard because we want to celebrate with our students, but I think having activities that don't require students to focus on potentially traumatic things is a good idea.
Rising Star
I have had students tell me thank you for sharing my story with them. They see our humanity and understand that we hurt sometimes, too.
What is hard for me is that I do not celebrate the holidays. I am not religious and do not conform to the commercialization of these holidays. My personal kids did not know what santa was, easter bunny, etc. I cannot relate to what these students go through. I also do not burst any bubbles either. I just tell them I do not observe any holiday but Thanksgiving, since it is not a religious holiday. I love the family aspect,. So it does not change for how present I am with my students.
Rising Star
My family celebrates Christmas and Easter, but Thanksgiving is my favorite of all. I hate the commercialization of holidays.
