I don’t think the overall dynamic has changed much.
- On average, McK gets to equity Partner 1-2 years faster than BCG. McK’s inclusion of meaningful equity for new Partners is relatively recent.
- Those first/second year McK Partners make more than their average BCG peers, who used to be called Principals 3/4 and now are called Partner 1/2 (not actually 1/2 but simple to understand here). BCG has narrowed, but certainly not closed, the gap with the new structure.
- New BCG MDPs (with equity) make more than new McK Partners (though arrive at that title later). This is consistent with broader comp philosophy at both firms: BCG spreads MDP comp more generously down the ranks, while McK concentrates it in senior partners
- New BCG MDPs have the same voting stake as Senior ones. Again, McK concentrates governance in the senior ranks.
- Result: Cumulative earnings for McK surpass BCG for several years before and after equity partner election. BCG surpasses McK in the mid-Partner tenure. Beyond that, there is a wide range of outcomes; single year comp is likely higher at McK for top performing senior partners, but more variable than at BCG.
Yes good take on the realities

Partner 1/2 is the new name for old Principal 3/4. It’s an extra promo point, a significant raise, and still no equity. Equity comes at MDP, which is roughly the same timeline it always was.
Partner2 - up to $600k TC (though often Max performers are elected to MDP earlier than they would actually reach that number)
MDP1 - Thumb in the air, tight distro around $1M TC.
Do McK first year partners earn equity or is that reserved for senior partners only? I always thought that even first year McK partners can earn $1M+
Mentor
3 - no, obviously. OP means that NOW all McK partners earn equity. Previously, newish Partners did not.

Interesting that we all have such different models of partner compensation. Makes it much harder to track apples:apples when comparing titles / trajectory.
Not sure at which firm it’s better to make partner, but a partnership at a PE firm is almost always a better gig anyway.
Coach
This is a silly comparison. BCG has 2-3000 Partners, 1400 of which are MDPs. That’s probably more the sum of all MF GPs combined. Different concentration, very different risk profile (especially with erosion of 2/20).
