Been a while since I was on Fishbowl, and want to share my journey from making 60k to 500k.

TL;DR (details below):
- 2015 started at EY as auditor
- 2017 left EY, went to Deloitte Advisory as senior consultant
- 2018&2019: took an online CS degree (part time), still at D
- 2020: got put in PIP, left D and got first job as software engineer
- 2021: took second FT job, working both simultaneously

TC progression (base):
60->72->135->320
TC progression (base + bonus + equity):
60->72->185->485

One full time job is enough for me…thanks though 👍

Yup. I can’t imagine pulling this off as audit/tax at Big 4.

It was a master strike - you let Deloitte pay for your CS degree 🤣

That is so true…

I started out with a MS in accounting, worked at EY as an auditor. After 2 busy seasons, I know this is definitely not for me and left. Moved to Deloitte Advisory, worked as a senior consultant with a litte bump in comp. Too much politics, constant stress, constant fighting for good projects. I realized I could never enjoy public accounting.

I decided to do a part time Computer Science degree (online) while maintaining low effort at Deloitte. As a result, I got put in the so called performance improvement plan. By that time, I was almost done with the online degree and started practicing leetcode like crazy. Scored the first software engineer (SWE) job at a big tech and left D immediately. I almost doubled my base, but more importantly, I really enjoyed the work. Got promoted only after a year.

COVID happened during that time and everyone worked remote. I got reached out by an HR at a startup, offering an opportunity for a remote SWE position. After seeing the offer (which is higher than what I am getting paid at the big tech), I came up with a crazy idea of working both jobs at the same time. Turned out it’s actually very feasible. There is even a community of people who are doing it (they call themselves overemployed).

After the first 6 months, I am still working 2 jobs and average around 40-45 hours a week. I realize that as a software engineer, once you feel comfortable with your job and know what to do, you only need to code 20-25 hours a week to get things done, which will never happen in public accounting.

So that’s it. You may ask, don’t you get burned out? Yes, a little bit at the beginning but hours are still way better than for auditors. You may ask, aren’t you afraid of getting caught? Yes, but as long as you stay low and cautious, you should be good. What keep me going are the two huge paychecks every other week. Now that I’m making close to what a first year partner makes, I plan to invest wisely and maybe retire early.

Hi, I am impressed with your transition. I am auditor and planning to pursue software engineer. Can you please DM which university it was and the details of programming language that you studied. Thank you!

Apparently an online CS degree gets you further than a master's degree in accounting😔

I’m also very curious. Read somewhere in a recent post, a first-year partner makes around 500k.

do both of your employers know you are working FT for each of them? i doubt this would be allowed or approved. tbh this sounds like a house of cards that will collapse the moment you get busy or put on a challenging project….

Transition to tech seems also quite risky. In fact degree is cheaper, but the odds getting high paying job are also quite low.

I am Product Owner, and have an opportunity to change my Title to "Product Manager". The actual work I'm doing will not change significantly, it's just a Title change, since I've been working less and less with the scrum teams and doing more product analysis over the last year. My main goal with this is to ensure this looks good on my CV. My thought is a Product Manager role seems more senior to a product owner. Any thoughts on this and any advice on how to approach this? I'm based in London.
