There's Loop feedback. This gives you an opportunity to review anyone, including your Manager. I'm a Manager and try to be as team-oriented, as possible. Regardless of level.
Same boat. Manager just severely lacking any type of EQ or appropriateness in when/how to provide feedback (giving feedback in front of clients or peers). I connected with the SM on the project and voiced my concerns and treatment by the manager, turns out they expect more of the manager when it comes to leadership and this type of treatment is not ok. Also connect with other C or SC if they are getting the same vibe from the manager, and having them bring it up with the SM. Voice your anxiousness around expectations by tying it back to your goals so it’s not coming across as just butt hurt feelings but rational reaction to unclear expectations. I used this opportunity to really connect with project leadership.
Try asking for help also with other C or SC who has more time and not this direct report relationship. You won’t have to worry about your performance review with them. As a M, sometimes it can be that you want to give support to your team members but new hires just require so much hand holding and you simply don’t have enough time and wish that they had more experience. So I’m not saying your M is treating your questions the right way, just sharing an alternative approach. If your M can’t help you, find someone else that can help you decipher your M’s message (ideally someone that has worked with him/her) or someone that had been on a similar type of project. You can’t expect your M to guide you every single step of the way. You need to find your own support system.
Dont be shy to ask for other people in your offering for help, especially the ones that have been with the firm for longer, the ones that can show you the ropes. Doesn’t even have to have content knowledge of the project. Good luck navigating and build up that support system!
