Keep you work hours strictly for s majority of the time, especially if unpaid overtime. When needed for urgency peak volume get short term paid overtime. If you're needed to work outside work hours, either : a) you need to escalate for proper FTE calculation, b) prioritise better during work hours and maximise efficiency and efficacy/effectiveness, c) delegate non-criyical task on those you can rely, if none, replace them until you have some.
Companies don't bat an eye when needing to ruthlessly prioritise and/or cut costs. Employees need to be equally ruthless in their priorities (including work-life balance and mental health) and on working only for which they are properly paid/recognised/rewarded.
Totally feel this and dealing with the same for awhile now. I think a big part of it is systemic and unless the system changes, burnout will repeat itself. Try to set boundaries for yourself & take joy outside of work to recharge.
I’ve consulted an occupational therapist due to other issues and the main thing I learned is that you have to take breaks and take them often. They’re supposed to be really small. Inconspicuous sometimes. Just taking a moment to close your eyes, scanning the room, leaving the office for a coffee, going to the bathroom, get some water, chat with a coworker. Those little pockets of air really can reset you and just be enough to make a difference. (That’s if you want to stay in the role).
Also the HBR book on burnout has been immensely helpful. Sometimes it’s about alignment, what are the little shifts you can do in your job that can help you feel more fulfilled. Something else that marked me the is… the strongest ones and the more responsible ones tend to burnout. Those who care a lot and take pride in their work. Caring and taking a “hit” over and over again wears you out after some time.
I'm in the exact same spot... I think what I'm trying to do right now is realize that no one cares as much as I do. I see other coworkers completely unbothered and logging off early, not working weekends, so I'm going to try to go against my natural instinct and just stop caring and stop working so much. Hopefully, it will help, but we'll see!
You might find the burnout bowl community helpful? It is a tough situation but pulling back can really help you get some perspective even if it feels counterintuitive at the outset… trust me - look after your health it is irreplaceable
It sounds like you are carrying other people’s water. It’s not possible for you to do that long term. Make sure people in your team are meeting YOUR expectations too, so that you can carry on in your role in a more sustainable way. Pass the water back asap.💕
Leave of absence. Totally disconnect.
