Calling AlixPartners people working in the West Coast offices! Do you have work location requirements? My family live in San Luis Obispo and would love to be based (and travel from) there. Is that something you would think is possible without compromising on client delivery / team socials?

Never seen it matter, other than the personal pain some folks used to have with unpleasant flight options.

You can live wherever you want as long as you can get to the office/client as required.

Restructuring and FAS require certain hires to be closer to offices but EI has none.

Thank you everyone for the insight, it seems like there is no hard and fast “rule”. By context the office I’m in at the moment it’s not uncommon to be expected to be at the office with very short notice, not feasible if you’re living out of town. If it is a case of extra logistical planning and some sleepy mornings that’s something I could happily compromise on (and SLO airport is surprisingly well connected!)

Not sure what the exact rules / requirements are but I know people who have lived away from their “home office”. For example I know somebody who lived in, I believe, Colorado, but was technically part of our Chicago office.

Pretty sure he was able to fly to / stay at a hotel on his corporate account for certain company events.

I don’t think it matters. You may live wherever you want to.

Thanks everyone for the info!

San Luis Obispo is pretty remote. The closest airports are Monterey and Santa Barbara, which are one and a half to two hours away, and LA is a 3-hour drive (no traffic).

If we do start traveling again, or if you will need to regularly be in the office, that doesn't sound sustainable.

Doesn’t matter we all - I know folks in the LA office who live in San Diego and Palm Spring. SLO is a bit more remote but as long you don’t mind the commute whenever you need to travel in the future (which will be way less intense in the future than it was pre-pandemic), no one will care.

We only have a few projects going on in west coast. So when traveling begins, prepare to take red eyes to midwest/east coast every week if you live in west coast

Was this a problem at A&M? I know some people in our West coast offices and seems like this wouldn’t be an issue as long as you’re willing to make the longer commute when /if we get back to weekly travel.

Not a problem as far as I’m aware, it so happens I’m leaving A&M but will be initially overseas with Alix. My wife and I had always thought if we moved back to California we’d have to live in either LA/SF which we weren’t too keen on. A longer commute would be something we would be happy to compromise on!

Hi everyone. I’m a front end software engineer. I’m interviewing next week for a solutions engineer at a company I really like, which I mistakenly applied for as I saw they needed ReactJS, JavaScript, HTML/CSS. Upon reading the job description, it’s clear I will be doing a lot of sales and client consulting over actually coding. I know they have a FE SWE role open. How would you approach asking the recruiter if there are any SWE openings I could be considered for instead ?

My new company lawyers are not providing clear guidance on this and suggesting against travel due to COVID in general. Thank you.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

I’ve over 15 yrs experience and looking for job with no luck. Everyone telling me sending apps for senior roles (VP plus) doesn’t work.
Can anyone help me with reaching out to people via email. Formats/ content I saw online are for entry level people. How do I ask people to connect with me without asking for a job ?

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role. Everybody says there's exit-ops aplenty, but I find myself with less options and even more picky than I did as an ambitious T2 undergrad student. Where do I go from here?
