McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Well, first things first, you need to understand the difference between a Hedge Fund and a Mutual Fund/Asset Manager. There are only a select amount of HFs with $25B+ AUM and one does not get head hunted for these roles. The only possible option to this would be a pod shop, but, again, there is no chance you are being looked at for a PM with 2YOE. On the other side, for a AM shop, people take years to get to a PM role there, as PMs never leave as the job is as cushy as one could be.
So, even if you are being HH'ed for a role at either firm, realistically you should be expecting an analyst role. HF pay is highly variable and firm dependent, but with the assumption you have relevant experience, you can expect anywhere from 100-150K base with bonus of anywhere from 0-200%. Same thing could be said for AM pay being firm dependent, but for AMs, I'd say to expect around 130K-150K all in.
Very helpful, thank you!
