Can you quote Wikipedia in a thesis?
Chief
A1: that is a harsh comparison. Wikipedia is fully sourced with an open log of edits. It is laughable that people will quote an article from a journalist who will provide no names of any sources o even citations for facts but will question a full sourced Wikipedia article.
I agree that you shouldn’t cite Wikipedia itself (you should use a source) but to compare the content to fishbowl is nonsense.

Have you ever negotiated anything?
If I’m sitting across the table from you, WTF do I care what Glassdoor says?
Chief
Sure - the amount you would need to accept this job vs. some other job, or to leave your current one.
Don’t do this pls. HR will just laugh at you and say there’s a lot of misinformation out on the internet blahblah and salary reports are overinflated. (I used to sit next to HR and they get this a lot).
Just say you did some additional research on the role and that you believe your salary should be X
Don’t need to quote, just ask what you want and if it’s the range they’re willing to offer for the position
This. No need to provide reference. Just state your number and no need to provide any justification whatsoever

No. And please don’t say my research suggests either. That makes it sound like you haven’t already been getting paid on the same level.
Say, based on the skills and experience I have, my range is between x and y. Just make sure with your research, you choose realistic numbers.
I think everything is worth trying once 🤷♀️
Sure no one will stop you

Yes! Or just say my research suggests…..
How else is one supposed to know?
It’s simple. You ask for what you’re worth.
The company that agrees is the company which values what you bring to the table. Anything else is a mismatch, for you and the company.
OP, I’m not sure what position you’re applying to but the best way to negotiate today is to know the salary range of the position you’re interviewing for, and ask at the upper end of the range if you feel you can justify it. No need to quote what Glassdoor says or anything like that. Your phrase should be, “I was hoping to make a base salary of x, but I’d be willing to consider any offer”
So how do you find x? Being on Fishbowl is a decent start, and just knowing your industry is even better. Like I work in tax and so I know the ranges of public accounting tax positions quite well, just from being around this stuff for years.
Another idea to learn salary ranges: New York City recently made a law where companies need to post the salary ranges of each position. I’d suggest trying to find whatever you’re applying for as a job posting mapped to New York City, which should give you a good idea of what the salary range is for that position. Even if the range is wide (and it often is) it should still help you understand what a good aggressive ask is for that position
And Glassdoor estimates are usually crap, for what it’s worth
