Your bosses boss, confer with team members or colleagues on your same level or at your boss' level. Use your network to make an informed decision
Yep ^
By not Red I mean production systems won’t go down but it is still considered relatively urgent.
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
Fortune favors the bold.
Make the decision, no question.
I will NOT make the change without an approval (Director or someone else in that capacity). That’s the short answer. I will use the following as a framework.
1. What is the impact of not making the change? What is the drop dead date by which this change absolutely needs to be made?. This will help me answer questions as I try to find my way through.
2. how long is the director out? And the backup? If the change can’t wait until either of them return then go to 3.
3. who is the backup to the backup?. I will find someone who can provide approval for this change. I’d also go higher than the director and get guidance. Without any sort of approval or buy in, I’d be hesitant to initiate a change.
I would absolutely never make the change without the right approvals. I’ve been burned way too many times in these exact scenarios. There is always a way to escalate and find someone who can approve
