We have an au pair in NYC for our 2 kids. She works 45 hours/week. Between the agency fee and her salary it’s about $1500/month plus her food. We also pay for her plane tickets home twice a year and give her other gifts/bonuses but that stuff isn’t mandatory.
do you mind my asking where you live? I have 2 kids and would love the flexibility of an au pair - but accommodating one in the city (extra bedroom etc) is a barrier.
How do you Americans do it I have no idea! Most of the European countries have free child care! Even if you need to pay the highest fee, it’s (avarage) around 500/600 euros per month. And the more kids you have the more money you get from the Government (regardless of your income). 😱 you are heroes!
I’m not joking- I just looked it up. In Germany, for example, military spending was 1.2% GDP in 2018. In the US, 3.2%. 2% may not sound like a lot, but it’s hundreds of billions of dollars difference. That could pay for all the social programs you speak of, and then some, if we slashed military spending to 1.2%.
How is everyone able to save, pay debt, buy homes, go on vacations etc if so much is being spent on childcare. Am I just not making enough to be able to afford these rates? Sitting here in shock!!!
NYT Parenting has recently been shining a light on these struggles many of us has but don’t often talk about.

Reading through these makes it so painfully obvious how screwed our country is. We represent a relatively financially well off/access to some capital group of people and we feel the pinch of childcare costs. It's hard to imagine how families are supposed to manage who make the American average salary of $50K. I have friends in other countries who speak of subsizded childcare and it seems like a far off dream. 😩
Yes! That wasn’t the initial goal of the post (my goal was to “shop” around) but post after post, minus the smaller markets I’m sitting here like damn most of us are probably comfortably in the six figures but how is that we all are paying sooooo much? Coupled with cost of living, how is it that I still feel like I don’t have a pot to piss in at the end of the month? It’s insane.
$560 a month in South Dakota for an infant.
South Dakota eh? Noted. Moving there tomorrow!
All of my money goes to childcare, food and rent. $37k/ year for my toddlers daycare program which doesn’t run during July and August; nanny for pick ups for my older child from free preK at $2400/month and a baby on the way. Not sustainable.
Westchester.. 2 kids.. nanny, 55 hrs per week: 4800 per month. Yup.
$1,850 per month for my baby (5 days week) in NYC. A nanny share - which is the best of both worlds - cheaper but he still gets amazing care
NYC - $3k for one at a daycare center but exploring other options as I’m expecting another.
$850 for 2 days a week of infant care at a daycare/preschool in NJ (commute into NYC for work) and another $120 on Fridays for a babysitter while I WFH. Two days we have grandparents come over which is a big part of why we live where we do.
$1850/month for 3 yr old in preschool - 5 days/week, full days
I am now even more convinced to just take the time off when my kids are born. thousands in childcare plus the stress of full time parenting/full time working. my future husband better get on board lol
Honestly the work is what saves me and keeps my PPA/PPD at bay. Taking time off to just take care of a kid ain’t exactly easy esp if you’ve reached a certain point in your career. I just try to keep in mind this is only temporary. There will be relief once public school starts.
We were living in BK and had to have a nanny since day cares were few and far between. It was about 2400/month and not sustainable so we moved to NJ largely because of childcare. Daughter just started at public school and we pay $360/month for after care. My infant son just started at the preschool she attended, it’s $1480/month for his full time care.
My 2.5 year old is in Montessori full time + aftercare = $1400 in Beacon NY (Hudson Valley)
The best Montessori kindergarten in my town (in Germany) is 280euro per month. 😱😱😱
Westchester 1 toddler: 50 hours of daycare $2,100 a month. Plus after care sitter who picks up, $400 a month. Also since the house and animals need attention I can’t provide: Housekeeper $720 a month (weekly). Dog walker $500 a month. Planning on going freelance because I never see my child.
$1400 north NJ, 15 mo old full time daycare
That seems like nothing but she lives with you so I guess that helps?
Yes, she gets room and board.
Austin. Daycare. $1k for a toddler and $1250 for an infant so $2250 total
Chicago - 3 year old preschool full day and infant 5 days a week - $3200/month
Same in Chicago
3600 for Daycare in Chicago, LP
2200 for an infant
1500 for a 3, almost 4-year-old
(Less 100 sibling discount)
