san antonio looks older and dirtier than austin in my opinion
Been going here for a year for a client. San Antonio is not a great city.
I lived in San Antonio for ~7 years, I actually enjoyed my time there. Been gone for about 5 years so take with grain of salt.
Folks are right that San Antonio is “smaller” than what most people think of. It’s got a decent population and is pretty spread out but a lottttttttt of the town is lower income family homes. This leads to the stuff to do, outside of tourist/cultural things, to be kind of pocketed around. There is actually a lot of foodie attraction to San Antonio....not necessarily in high end fancy restaurants but more “for the people”, if you will. There is a huge military presence in San Antonio, a public and 3-4 private universities, HQs for a number of fortune 100/500 companies, delivery centers for big4/ACN....it’s not a bad place to be.
As for neighborhoods or areas I would 100% say Alamo heights. I ended up living there for ~3 years before I left and it completely changed my experience. Nice area, central, reasonable commutes to most of the city...airports 10 minutes away(but not in flight path). Stone oak/Hollywood park(iirc) were nicer areas too. Just about anything closer to 281 north of 410 will be decent. NW SA, from more or less i10/410 out to i10/1604(and outside 1604) is pretty “basic” - chains, box stores, decent apartments and houses. Southwest, south, and big parts of the east sides of 410 were generally considered tougher parts of town and I’d suggest avoiding them. I have been told that some of south SA is really up and coming, though.
CoL is cheap af in SA so you almost certainly could buy, if interested, in a really nice neighborhood for what a shack would cost elsewhere.
Austin is 1.5-~2 hours away depending on where you’re at, that commute would be murder. I wouldn’t suggest it.
I currently live in, and am originally from, Austin and wouldnt immediately say no to a move down if circumstances were right.
Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more specifics.
I was a college kid and then “professional” for a few of the years in SA. I actually think it caters to both. But then again I think the “every restaurant has to be “it” and every event needs to be nation wide” mindset the analysts/seniors have in Austin is a lot different than where I was same age. I probably wouldn’t want to move to an “it” place, but maybe I’m lame.
San Antonio sucks big time.
😆
Would love recommendations/assurances!
Where do you live now? It’s much smaller than you think, and a huge part of the area is tourist driven
I live in Chicago so would be a totally change :/
San Antonio is no bueno. Austin is great but it’s not a commute you would want to do. Also not that many jobs, only a few large companies.
From a guy who lives and loves Texas, SA is a shit hole. I was just sitting around a table with other Texas natives this past weekend and we were joking about whether SA is the crotch or the armpit of Texas....and you will not be able to easily commute from Austin.
Brownsville is obviously the crotch and Galveston the armpit.
Why don’t you like San Antonio?
Very useful all! I assume single and semi-young this sounds like not an amazing place? I suppose living in between SA and Austin would leave me in some lame suburb...
Very helpful to know!
