Every company is different and every experience is different. Don’t let fear hold you back. If you don’t like the director role, you can always change jobs and find something that better suits you. My jump from manager to director was fine. I was still hands on with work which I loved, but I got more insight into the business and I learned a lot. It was when I made the leap from director to senior director at one company that I wished I was in a lower position. This was due to the company’s leadership team and the way they led people and ran the place. I think had I been in a different environment that particular move up would have been less questionable for me.
Your experience is more common than you think. You have to learn now to be a thought partner and leader not a doer. Some ways to learn to hand off is to look across your team and try to help them connect their work to bigger picture of the organization. Help them to become as effective as you, while at the same time seek that same guidance from your leader.
