I’m going through final interviews and want to see what your experience was like (negotiation process, initial offer higher/lower than expected?, did you give them a salary expectation range? You need to do good where you are at, get an offer to return, and then apply. On your resume, put “permanent offer extended”. I’m the hiring partner at my firm and, whether good or bad, a firm needs to know that your current firm wanted you. Otherwise, they will think they are taking a risk on a person that your current firm did not want. Trust me. If you apply now, it will do more harm then good. However, if you apply when the summer is over, you could have an opportunity to pick up a spot of a summer who didn’t get an offer. Oh, and if you get an offer, keep it, accept it, and keep looking. I know it sounds messed up, but don’t go out in these streets with no job.

Semi-agree, but in recent years, 3L hiring starts in mid July, so I would not wait until you get an offer. I'd apply and send an update letter/updated email. And in your CL be clear you are looking for M&A plus, not that you dislike M&A.
Usually firm posts will be different for law students vs laterals
Guess you aren’t liking the M&A work?
Got it, makes sense! Best of luck finding something that is a good fit!
You can apply during your 3L year for entry level positions. Firms will note that in the posting.
