Current Summer Associate at Amlaw50 firm in the corporate group which pretty much only does M&A. When should I start applying if I want to switch firms? My school doesn’t allow rising 3ls to participate in OCI, so I’m assuming my only option is to email firm recruiters directly and/or look at firm websites for openings. Is it ok to apply to junior positions on firm websites or are there specific postings for rising 3ls?

You need to do good where you are at, get an offer to return, and then apply. On your resume, put “permanent offer extended”. I’m the hiring partner at my firm and, whether good or bad, a firm needs to know that your current firm wanted you. Otherwise, they will think they are taking a risk on a person that your current firm did not want. Trust me. If you apply now, it will do more harm then good. However, if you apply when the summer is over, you could have an opportunity to pick up a spot of a summer who didn’t get an offer. Oh, and if you get an offer, keep it, accept it, and keep looking. I know it sounds messed up, but don’t go out in these streets with no job.

Semi-agree, but in recent years, 3L hiring starts in mid July, so I would not wait until you get an offer. I'd apply and send an update letter/updated email. And in your CL be clear you are looking for M&A plus, not that you dislike M&A.

Guess you aren’t liking the M&A work?

Got it, makes sense! Best of luck finding something that is a good fit!

You can apply during your 3L year for entry level positions. Firms will note that in the posting.

On a meet and greet zoom with a potential client today. Junior employee and company senior partner. Junior asks if we can supply him with an animator by Friday. I respond politely that we’re not talent management, it would cost him more than hiring directly, and it would shrink our freelance pool for our other project clients. The senior partner sees the sense in this a mile off. Now the question: did the senior partner include the junior in order to get him to ask these sorts of questions?

Applying to industry after 2 yrs in a data-heavy strategy consulting role, and running into an odd problem: people are automatically putting me into a "heavy-quant" box and becoming apprehensive of my fit for a business role (strategy, FP&A, etc). 2 Qs: 1. Does this sound plausible, or am I overthinking based on a small sample? 2. How would you highlight your fit/interest in moderately quantitative roles? Received MBB offer, which I’m very grateful for. I have a medical degree with some work experience. I want to stay in healthcare. I like pharma/biotech, provider systems but also early stage healthcare investing. Certainly open to consulting long term. Few Qs: is the promotion pipeline any different for advanced degree folks? What sort of exit opps would be available to someone like me post MBB? Would my skill set/knowledge base be uniquely sought after, or not really? Thank you for your help!

I’m an Analytics Consultant looking for industry roles as a data analyst/BI Developer. I’ve had a few recruiters and job postings ask directly for a dashboard sample. I obviously can’t give them anything I’ve worked on because of client’s proprietary data and NDAs. Has anyone run into this problem before? Did you end up making a dashboard with public data solely for industry interviews?

It felt amazing to disconnect from work and regain a feeling of humanity and life. How do others avoid falling into this trap?
