There are free cost of living calculators online
OP- they’re right. The calculator is actually your best option, best answer you’ll get is that someone else moved and their situation won’t be exactly like yours
SF: Double It
SD: 1.5x it
Denver: About the same
California schools are atrocious due to prop 13. North shore Chicago burb schools are palaces compared to anything here.

M1 - I wasn’t bragging to some random people here on internet. I was just correcting when you said schools are not good here. Where I come from, we consider quality of education not how big the buildings are. I lived in Chicago suburbs for 8 years, so I know the differences.
I moved from Chicago to Denver.m. Housing is more expensive here - however if you’re ok with not being downtown you can find better prices. Food is more expensive here and worse. Entertainment is hard to compare since the activities are different.
Denver is definitely significantly cheaper than the other two cities. It’s not way more than Chicago, I was just surprised that a smaller city with less taxes felt so pricey. I have not heard great things about the schools here but I don’t have kids. I’m sure Littleton has good schools.

C2 agreed. Honestly with good planning like trips to Florida or CO and being based out of Chicago is not a bad option at all.
Moved from Denver to Chicago, and going out to eat feels like a bargain here. Schools in Denver are terrible by Chicagoland standards, even the good ones. Maybe cherry creek area has some decent ones. Littleton/highlands ranch feels pretty “texasy” but everyone in Colorado thinks it’s glamorous.
You can only live in Colorado if you’re here for the mountains - Chicago is better in every single way. I couldn’t believe I was spending $80 for 2 people to eat at a semi chain or a brewery lol
I think Denver is relatively similar if we’re talking downtown COL.
$150K in Chicago translates to $250K in SF. That’s extra $5.5K/month after-tax. I get that rent may be $2k higher, but where the other cost inflation of $3.5K come in? Transportation, groceries, and eating out?
