Dearest Fishbowl Community, I have a question for you guys,

Have any of you encountered a narcissistic leader or an individual who displayed narcissistic tendencies in your organization? Please share your story or any advice how you overcame that situation.

Back in my early days as an Assistant, I had the "pleasure" of working under Dr. Delusion, a master of charm and an expert at deflecting accountability. He'd shower the team with grandiose compliments one minute, and then throw us under the proverbial bus the next. I gathered my courage, documented everything (emails, witness accounts, the whole shebang), and went straight to HR. It wasn't easy, but speaking up was a weight lifted off my shoulders.

I used to work for someone very similar to the person you are describing. It was a really tough situation. I actually ended up leaving that whole company because it was too much.

Yes! A lot of the time. At first, it used to bug me such attitude. Now, I just do my own thing and try to ignore it. Usually just mute them or ignore them.

I had a Dr Narcissist who was very “loud” and made herself heard by everyone, true or not. I let my performance speak for itself and detached my emotions and ego from her existence and her behavior. Her performance also spoke for itself and she was eventually let go. Karma always wins.

My story is that I was a direct report to a Director who worked there for 20 years. I learned a lot, both good and bad. I lasted only a couple years before I switched jobs. She liked to have favorites in the department, and would put other managers and directors against each other, making everyone second guess themselves and their management. There was also a lot of delegation, but few working managers. In the end, I used my knowledge to switch jobs within the organization to do the same thing but just in another department. My rule is always document everything on your resume for when you're ready to leave.

I have a new employee that started last Monday, unfortunately it’s not going to work out. Long story, but we’re fairly certain the individual is using Meth and appears to have started/restarted fairly recently. I work with physicians, so it’s a consensus. We have to terminate employment, but what ethical obligation do we have? Two young children at home and no spouse. This is weighing heavily on us.

I’m an application analyst in the midwest for a small CAH. I was hired into this position at $27.15/hr and have now worked here for a year. I’m curious how my salary compares with others working in the midwest. My primary responsibilities are systems/HIE integrations using Meditech, HL7 transfer, SQL report writing, and user administration (just to name a few).

I’m a scheduler in a major hospital, see my position in other departments being advertised as remote available. How can I successfully negotiate WFH? I’d like to cut down on my 44-mile one way commute.

Background: I’ve been in my position for 1 yr. I have 20 yrs military experience, bachelors in Business. I took an entry level $15/hour job to get my foot in the door. I’m actively looking for a promotion. But 44 miles plus gas & business casual clothing on $15/hour is killing me.

Any advice on how to pick the best company for me when offered a position from more than 1 company? I've been interviewing extensively with 4 companies, and I believe 2 are getting ready to send offers. If I receive more than 1 offer - how do I choose? I compared benefits, pros/cons, compared them on Glassdoor, questioned them about growth opportunities, asked about their culture.....anything I am missing? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m a young(ish) male running a private practice. Been with the group a year and a half and haven’t exactly gelled with some of the older employees. We’ve made tremendous financial improvements but in a meeting last night one of the physicians stated, in front of me, maybe we shouldn’t have hired a young guy to run the practice….I can’t think of a more passive aggressive way to ask someone to leave. Thoughts?
