Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month in the US
Call to action: September marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US. Take time this month to learn the significance of the holiday and educate yourself on different terms commonly used in the US.
Understanding: Each year from Sep 15 to Oct 15, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Hispanic and Latin American countries. You may have heard the terms Latino and Hispanic used in reference to the holiday. Latino and Hispanic are not terms that define race. Rather, they are terms that describe ethnicity. Latinos can identify with any race. Below are some definitions to help get you started in understanding these terms:
⚫️Ethnicity: The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.
⚫️Spanish: People who have origins in or come from the country of Spain.
⚫️Hispanic: People who have origins in Spanish-speaking countries. This includes countries such as Mexico, parts of Central and South America (Guatemala, Columbia, etc.), and the Caribbean (Cuba and Puerto Rico, etc.)
⚫️Latino, Latina, Latinx: Three terms to represent people of all genders who have origins in Latin American counties. Unlike Hispanics, this term includes Brazil and Haiti.
Learn More: Visit Nation Hispanic Heritage Month website to learn more about the holiday and how to celebrate. Watch Fernanda Ponce TEDx Talk ‘What Being Hispanic and Latinx Means in the United States’ (12min) to learn more about the terms, data and experience of Hispanic and Latinx individuals.

Great Ted talk! Thank you for sharing 🤩
We're organizing a LatinX Heritage Month Kickoff Extravaganza for next week. There will be Colombian food and salsa dancers.
Ugh. As a Latino myself. I cringe every time I hear "LatinX" it's linguistic imperialism and it's incredibly offensive. If you need a gender neutral term just use "Latin" or "Hispanic" because Latinx is literally incompatible with how Spanish is spoke and pronounced.

Love this! I have a Brazilian colleague who always feels excluded by these months so I’ll try to incorporate more Brazil/Latinx inclusive oriented aspects
