Just do the target retirement funds based on your age
It’s just passive index funds and portfolio optimization theory. No need to overthink
I have most of mine in the total stock market index, with smaller amounts in the international index and REIT index for some diversification. I am more on the aggressive / risk tolerant end of the spectrum, otherwise I might do the target retirement fund.
Hard to be disappointed in the performance relative to the benchmark index when your investing *in* the benchmark index.
Fees are too high on target date funds. Get whatever total market indexes they have and a bit of global and small cap indexes
That's not true with the vanguard funds, unless the Deloitte 401k adds excess fees
I have the target fund both direct and through WMP, both of which have reasonable/normal fees for vanguard (so lower than average)
It’s funny about mutual fund fees. 10 or 15 years ago the advice was to find fees less than 1% per year. Now that the big Vanguard index funds have 0.02% annual fees, anything higher than that is looked at as “too high”.
I’m all for rock bottom fees, and I am in the 0.02% types of funds myself, but I suppose it’s up to each person to decide if it’s worth paying the 0.13% fee to have Vanguard rebalance your portfolio for you every year, which is what the target retirement funds do.
