In my world anything less than $250k is terrible. I’d need $300k base to consider. I made just shy of $200k freelancing last year and that was with only 8 months of work.
Hmm. I actually think what’s been posted seems low. I’ve interviewed for a couple HOP jobs over the past few years, but none seemed like the right fit, and I’m making decent money now, so I didn’t jump. With that said, the salaries ranged from $250k base with a TBD bonus to almost $300k base only. Seems to me HOP salaries have a large range depending on size of agency, size of the department you’d be managing, city and how high a profile you’d be.
Depends on the size of the agency too. If it’s mid-size I would ask for $200-225
$220k at the low end. $250k is the usual. More with experience and/or great work in your past.
Mullen?
EP 3 Yeah, most of the freelancers I know could run a department. Enough years experience, solid reputation and the reels to back it up. I’ve interviewed for an HOP job in the neighborhood of $280k. Not in LA, though. Another, I think, was as low as $225k. Crazy. The fact that I can’t remember for sure should tell you what I thought of the job...
I agree that $225-$250k seems low for what the job may entail. Some agencies expect the HOP position to be strictly managerial, while others allow/expect their HOP to produce as well. Whether that’s a benefit or not is up to you. But when you can make a solid living while only working 7-9 months a year, it would take a killer salary to settle down. Freelance rates keep going up and staff salaries should as well. Should. So...I think that the range of salaries for HOP may depend on the freelance culture in the city in question. I think LA is just as freelance heavy as SF, so the salaries should reflect that.
Ex boss made $165 don't know if that's good or bad
One was a decent sized office of a holding company agency network, the other was a mid-sized, but fairly well known independent. Both were HOP over broadcast/content/art buying. One added digital duties (working with some senior “right hand” EP’s).
I say the size of the agency was about 200 people. Part of a large holdings company. I can’t remember if it included other forms of production like, digital and print
EP1 were these positions at holding company agencies - with a large staff?
@freelance1 - that’s the salaries that I have been hearing the most. Definitely that range.
