Backstory: I originally applied for a Principal role with Discover. In the midst of the interview process the existing rec was closed out, upgraded to a Senior Principal Role, and reposted. The original compensation expectation was discussed and agreed upon, but the process moved very quickly after the upgraded req was posted:
-> Last Friday: First interview.
-> Yesterday (Weds): second (and final) interview.
-> Today (Thurs): Recruiter (filling in for my actual recruiter who is OOO) reaches out asking for my compensation expectation (based on any original discussions had with my recruiter) because the team is looking to move forward with offer.
The ranges on Glassdoor seem to be pretty accurate so use those as a loose benchmark. But I will say they are open to salary negotiations and will likely come close to your counter offer if it’s reasonable and still within their budgeted ranges. Each pay grade (and It sounds like this is a PG 9) has a hard ceiling. I can’t say with certainty because there’s so many different roles (and locations) but I believe the high end for Sr. Principal is about $170k.
They won’t give you the very top because they won’t have much room to give you a raise in subsequent years, but if you’re highly qualified and a top candidate they’ll accept you negotiating for the high end of the range.
I believe bonuses are also fixed at that grade to 10% and I don’t think equity is available. So I would definitely make sure you negotiate your base as much as possible.
