No need to transition—all the strategists I know are incredibly more talented creatives than any copywriter on their team.
Plz Plz Plz Plz be quiet Mediacom plzzzz 😭😭😭
I think it typically happens the other way around. A lot of English major types enter the marketing field with pure writing skills and then eventually take on more strategic/managerial positions (that's how it's been for me). As a strat you have more opportunities to pivot into more lucrative fields/roles, and double-down on business expertise, etc. It might not be as creative, but if money is a concern, there’re paths to more money as a strat.
It makes sense to pivot into copywriting, if you really like doing it, are good at it and have ambitions to get to CD level or maybe expand beyond advertising. Creatives make more in advertising, and rightfully so, but it’s so competitive and it’s not just gonna fall on you unless you’re good at what you do, network, etc.
Truly depends on your goals, I used to be in a creative field before advertising, and specifically went for strategy because it aligned with my long-term goals.
Why would you want to be an art director or copywriter and work two times as much with four times the stress all while chasing the carrot they hang over your nose called Cannes Lions? And get denied raises and promotions because you should be lucky to be a creative in advertising?
