I believe most companies have AA networks. I’m not sure where you’re from but where I’m from black people take pride in joining these type of networks to uplift our other fellow minority groups and to let people know that we’re not ashamed of being in them. Why do you think people feel like they’re isolating themselves from others? Anyone can join these groups ya know?
KPMG 1 - it’s almost like this crazy stigma with some people. When you ask if they are a part of BPN, they say no or I don’t have time but then complain about how we don’t support each other. I joined a few years ago but can’t get some others to be active at all. I think they would be as surprised as I was when I realized how many people we have in high positions that look like me.
Most firms have resource groups for many different communities. Don't be afraid to join and connect with other people who look like you, have had the same experiences as you, and face the same challenges as you. These groups are critical for many and help with navigating through the cutthroat environment in public accounting. I myself am in the AA resource group at my firm. It's a great opportunity to find internal mentors and advocates to help you progress through your career.
PwC has one and it’s pretty active in the New York Metro. We have regular meetings and get together from time to time
Most firms have several networks. We have Black, Asian, LatIno, LBGT, Working Parents, Veterans, Disabled and who knows what else. They are all open for anyone to join so I find it odd that anyone would think they are isolating themselves. They are basically support groups.
