That nice watch could very easily cost more than a gold chain.
All races are flashy to an extent... look at wealthy white people when they flaunt wealth with multiple beach houses, yachts, etc.
I agree ... folks do it differently
A lot of gold chains and other jewelry people wear are fake and inexpensive.
Or handed down/gifted
The economic issues aren't the point, but this conversation caused me to start noticing that a lot of people with my same skin color had similar jewelry. Most of my white colleagues may have a nice watch, but not much after that. Thoughts?
Beyond jewelry I have always noticed the same thing. Flashy is also ones perspective. They may have modest jewelry, but 401K be in the 200K range by age 25.
Perhaps being that people of color as I am didn’t have the opportunity to afford or buy certain things that may make them feel as though they are important or wealthy now try and do so. As with people of other nationalities have had the opportunity to do these things and have become accustomed to knowing wealth is not what you spend but what you can save and acquire. That being said perhaps we should put our understanding of a person is not what they wear or have but what is their hearts and minds .
No. There are areas that we can be “extra” just by the nature of certain things within our cultures. But we’re no more innately flashy than anyone else. The young white folks at work all wear the same designers boots, Over priced Banana Republic clothes ($198 for a jacket), Kate Spade and Tory Burch bags ($450 mid range), and drive brand new Jeep Grand Cherokees ($40k brand new) on their 55k salaries. It might not be a gold chain, but it’s flashy in its own right.
I think this might be more reflective of your own circle or region than being a “black” thing necessarily.
