Describe what you believe a blue wall of silence is please.
I think it was obsolete when it started. Failing to hold each other accountable for actions is part of what got this profession to this state.
In my department, I feel like the blue wall of silence is still very much in effect. Everyone speaks highly of their colleagues and supports one another, even when there may be disagreements. I recently had a situation where I needed to report a mistake, and despite my apprehension, the other party was understanding and professional. I think that the blue wall of silence is still strong, as it allows us to maintain a level of respect and trust within our department.
Internally, yes, it’s very much a “pick your friends” situation even tho they held an “impartial” process.
Externally, no.
To IA, no.
If you mean not holding your fellow officers accountable for their actions, then no. There shouldn’t be a blue wall of silence. You wonder why the political climate is the way it is? Because officers have been abusing their authority for centuries and their fellow officers allowed it to happen. Or even lied to protect them. I’ve heard officers say that they’re are just a few bad apples. Well some jobs require everyone to be good.
American Airlines can’t be like, “Most of our pilots like to land. We just have a few bad apples that like to crash into mountains.” We’re held to a higher standard because we’re given so much authority. No officer is entitled to receive respect. Respect is earned. You want the political climate to change? Listen, sympathize, understand, learn & change.
