Do you all spend time combing through/organizing your email inbox daily similar to how you did it private practice? I just started my first IHC role and need to figure out a system.

I generally just create outlook folders alphabetized by client/topic name, then further subfolders for each underlying project/issue. Then basically drag and drop emails from my inbox into those subfolders. Keeps a clean inbox and whatever is left in it is basically my “to do list”

like

This. Im securities counsel and do same

like

Yeah. Why wouldn't you?

Yes that aspect of practice doesn't really change anywhere you go

10 minutes at the end of every day and 20-30 minutes on Fridays. Outlook flags, reminders and to-do tagging is my best friend.

It’s helpful to make the most of your day. Go through the motions. Sort by first received. Last received. Read an email here and there (you can skip the odd numbered one - ugh yucky). Arrange the pens on your desk by color. Inspect your carbon monoxide detector for battery health. Write down the default, annual bonus in a place you will remember (and set a reminder for next year). All in a day’s work tbh.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
