I wouldn’t always actively look but I wouldn’t say no to a recruiter if they fit my criteria of what a potential next step looks like. Life changes fast and if you lose business which leads to downsizing, it’s good to at least have had some conversations instead of starting at ground zero. It’s just not a stable enough job to think you’ll be somewhere 20 years.
I agree. You simply must be ready for the unexpected. Fighter pilots hope they never have to use the ejection seat, but it set to “standby” before every flight.
Only if you’re unhappy. Otherwise a distraction. Recruiters feed your ego for their own advantage. It’s hard to resist, but don’t believe the grass is greener...
I always at least take a phone call with a recruiter, even at agencies I never think I’d go to. It’s interesting to hear about their goals, the way they operate, etc. sometimes it surprises you and breaks down your preconceived ideas about them.
Actively looking no but maintaining any networking is always a good idea.
Industry events, LinkedIn, former colleagues.
You never know when you may need or want to move on and staying on peoples radar can’t hurt.

I wonder this too, but am concerned that jumping too often will look bad. I’ve been at my place for 7 months and I don’t really want to leave, but things are looking a little shaky in the future and a couple of recruiters have reached out
Always is a pretty intense, more like always open, frequently looking. The motivator is the fickle nature of the gig. Change is the only constant, and vigilance in the job search is really the only way you can control the changes.
