Whether I feel comfortable or not, I always have, because the alternative is far worse. Once you let that genie out its bottle, it’s very hard to put back.
i've always found it hard at my current place to say no to requests, as colleagues have in the past, invertedly threatened to ruin documents I've worked on if "they attempt to make amendments that would take me only a short while to do, and end up messing up your work".
I was on holiday abroad when that request came in, btw.
one time i did try and push back on a completely unrealistic short turnaround time and got shouted down until i did it.
and that was pre-omnicom, it's worse now.
The industry will take take take. You need to put up boundaries. That being said, sometimes you need to show you can be flexible on the occasional time you need to break them. It shows you’re a team player. But that should be very much the exception and not the norm.
I wish I could set boundaries against these “engagement” posts by “community managers” who are paid to ask questions instead of actual people with actual questions.
I did last year only for it to be mentioned in my review that I had boundaries as if it is a bad thing...shortly after I was let go.
Normally I do. I have an AD now who pushes back on my boundaries when I ask her for help lol. She sucks.
As a parent, I have to, or else my kids would be making their own dinner.
Totally relate. It’s so different with very little kids now. I’m out of pocket every night from 530-8 or 9 (at best), but always catch up.
It was a hard pill to swallow that I don’t have nearly as much time as my coworkers to get shit down.
Of course no , I do not know why you think I am uncomfortable to say no
Of course no , I do nor know why you think I am uncomfortable to say no
I’m never feel comfortable doing so, but I do see about pushing something’s back. If it’s a possible book worthy thing, just go with it. If it’s some huge bulk grunt work they want last minute overnight, I’ll just “How ASAP is this?”.
Several times, my client wants “big ideas” overnight, but most of the time nothing comes of it.
