Do you think account management is as glamorous as it once was? When I was in university and then starting out account management seemed so sophisticated- nice client dinners, wooing clients and celebrating wins with champagne, etc.

Account management has not been glamorous for over a decade (more like 2). As someone who was in account management for 10+ years before going in house, it’s been trending away from that direction and will continue to do so, no question. I don’t think that’s necessarily bad, though I miss some of the perks I got when I first started out near 2010. It’s definitely a more thankless task, but still plenty of opportunity to be strategic and learn from your team / learn the client biz. I would under no circumstances call it sophisticated though

I was in college the last ‘00s so that was always in my mind as I ventured into the field! It has been trending away. I wonder if I knew that then if I still would’ve pursued this route.

Over time things have gotten more data driven and less about wooing clients in the traditional sense. So no, it's not as glamorous as it might have seemed at one time. Then again, when I was in college I thought people were glamorous if they had bookshelves that weren't made of cinderblocks.

I am laughing. Thank you!

Account management is the least glamorous 😂😂😂 since the early 90s lol! It is thankless and wild and you have to be a bit of a masochist and get off on organization, budgets, spreadsheets and being yelled at every day. Also, I love it 🫠😂🤷🏽‍♀️

Which was my view on it back in school!!

Not at all. It's relatively thankless and mundane. I've only been in the workforce for 8 years, so that's really all I've ever known. I don't know exactly what I expected in this field, but I don't think it was this.

I’ve been here just a bit longer than you but I agree that I didn’t expect it to be so thankless.

I work for a small agency and manage our internal marketing acct. We had very few processes in place when I started. I’ve since created, implemented, and trained our dept. on project mgmt for clients and am trying to convince the owner to apply those principles to our internal jobs. They are resistant because they just want the work to be done and don’t “want to keep spending money on internal jobs”. I’m confused because we’re doing the work either way and “spending” in labor/resources.

Anyone else finding it very difficult to get any enjoyment out of account management these days? Any coping tips? I feel like being an account person is especially difficult in the COVID era since so much of what we do is manage communications, ensure the team is set up well etc. None of this feels particularly fun alone staring into the void of Zoom all day ... but the same pressure is still there. I feel like I spend every week counting down to the weekend which kinda sucks.

Hi everyone,

I'm going for a role for Account Director and have gone through the interviews with the head of accounts, BD as well as the ECD's. I received the following email at the end of the day:

"You are one of two candidates in the final round.

One thing we haven’t spoken about are your salary expectations. Could you have a think and let me know early next week as well as your employment status (residency permit)."

What would be the best way to answer this response? Appreciate the help

What is the average salary for an Account Manager position? For context, the agency is 100% remote and doesn’t base salary based on the employee’s location. Was originally told $80k but was then informed the recruiter made a mistake and that it will likely be mid-70s at the highest.

What are some good practices during the sales phase of a potential project to execute before the contract is signed? Seems obvious but would love some ideas on standard operating procedures that help with seamlessly handing over a signed contract to the account team. For example, speaking to the potential client explicitly about their role in staying on schedule, reviewing scope creep consequences, etc.
