You couldn’t just post this in one of the four wk threads?
Law, tech, finance do
Outside of Hollywood, politics and sports...no.
I didn’t say those industries don’t obsess about themselves...the question was “as much.” My belief is that advertising is a close second to the industries I mentioned. So what am I on? I’m hooked on phonics.
Rising Star
Yes. We’re all the same, despite what we might like to believe. Finance people love talking among themselves about finance stuff. Medical field professionals talk to each other about medical stuff. We all know it’s boring to everyone who isn’t in our same field, but it’s not boring to us.
Chief
Retail does.
The consultants do. There is major shade thrown there. McKinsey is their W+K.
But, the big difference? Their top firms almost exclusively hire from Harvard and a few other MBA programs. So it’s a more measurable marked difference built on pedigree not performance (but you don’t make partner if you don’t perform).
My guess is that there are more personalities in advertising than other areas. We hyper focus on individual talent in a way that something like... engineering doesn’t. Obviously there’s gossip in every field but my guess is it tends to be more concentrated within workplaces than across industry.
Hmm. I don’t know. The big consultancies trade talent like we do. And there are BiG personalities in terms of power and money. There’s bad behavior galore, lots of drinking (after every case there’s a case team dinner that you’d be shocked at the excess of), and abuse and drama.
There are these legendary stories of people who expensed cars or boats or traveled some crazy way or made money some crazy way... and affairs and tears and power grabs (with real consequences on income bc of the bonus structures).
