Do you travel with backpacks and no suitcases?

I see the appeal but thinking back on my ~10 international trips, only a few isolated instances would’ve benefited from a backpack while almost all had advantages for suitcases, such as waiting in line at customs for a long time.

So curious how it’s been for you if you went w/ backpack only.

I don't like taking a gamble on having to gate check a suitcase, and I hate fighting for my life dragging a suitcase across cobbled and/or uneven roads.

More and more they've been doing it preemptively when the flight is full (even when it's not), and not even giving you a chance to walk onto the plane. And no. not necessarily, I've been using a large, compressible travel backpack for years that is almost the size of a rolling suitcase (51L capacity and 22" tall), but because its soft I can generally stuff it under the seat in front of me, just enough to pass the walkthrough check and then I let it stick out a little under my seat (if needed).

Carry-on luggage and a small backpack for my laptop and toiletries.
