For all you VPs out there. A couple of good words every now and then does go a long way. Most of the time I hear a good word mostly from other team members. In the end, they are the ones who put it in the review.
It’s not that no one cares until you make a mistake, it’s that managers tend to be very bad at regular feedback beyond negative feedback.
Also, we tend to focus on negative feedback much more than positive when both are delivered.
That’s frustrating for sure. Trying asking for specific feedback. Maybe it’s a meeting you run or an idea you came up with and put out there. It’s harder to dodge that kind of feedback as opposed to “How am I doing?”
If you want more general feedback you can prompt it by asking “What should I start doing, what should I stop doing, and what should I continue to do?”
